The Southern African Garden is currently being constructed and will take two to four years to complete depending on funding. The first part of the project funded by Metro Organics is the creation of five trial beds using compost produced from the roadside green bins. Each bed is 12m by 8m. The trial beds consist of compost mixed with Melton soil in ratios of 10%, 20%, 30% 40% and 50%. The same southern African plants are planted in each bed and are monitored to observe their growth performance. The species planted in each trial bed are: <list is coming soon> The Metro Organics Grant has allowed 400 cubic metres of compost to a depth of about 20cm across to be added to the remaining half hectare of the Southern African Garden and crushed rock walking paths have been constructed. Free council mulch is placed over the beds as it arrives. When funding permits plants will be added to the main garden beds and some beds may require addition of scoria/gravel/soil to create raised beds to meet the growing needs of certain southern African plants. This project is supported by the Victorian Government’s Metropolitan Organics Strategy Fund.
